Site Preparation

What is Site Preparation?

Site Preparation is the beginning process in planting pine trees, or reforestation.  It is necessary to have good site preparation to ensure long term pine growth.  Site Prep usually is performed about one year after the timber has been harvested.

HEI is experienced in prescribing the proper mix of herbicides to control the various species on a site that will compete with the planted pines. Using the correct herbicide, surfactant, and volume of water is very important in controlling herbaceous and woody competition.

HEI will inspect the area to be treated, make a prescription, and provide a cost estimate.

Site Preparation for Longleaf Restoration

HEI has experience in site preparation for longleaf planting and for providing additional support such as banding (spraying weeds surrounding the longleaf seedlings) or other follow-up treatments that ensure survival on the seedlings.

Key Benefits of Site Preparation
  • Control unwanted hardwood competition
  • Possibility to use broad range or herbicides since pines have not been planted
  • Top soil is left in place and not disturbed
  • Existing debris will become organic matter
